Virginia Goldstein, Director Hawaii County Planning Department Oct. 3, 1998 25 Aupuni Street Hilo, HI 96720 Re: Resolution No. 279-98 Dear Mrs. Goldstein, I am writing on behalf of the Honl's Beach Association to express our support of resolution no. 279-98 asking the mayor to acquire the shoreline property at Wai'aha Bay in Kailua-Kona. Enclosed is over 860 signatures from the residents of Hawaii County in support of a Beach Park at Wai'aha Bay. This added to the previous 1,122 signatures submitted to your department shows strong community support for this resolution. Recent large-scale developments proposed for the area between Kailua and Keahou suggest the need for new parks to keep up with this growth. We need to look at the long-term for this four and a half-mile stretch along Ali'i drive without any parks. The Beach at Wai'aha is one of the few areas left that could be used to benefit residents and tourists alike. Kahalu'u and White Sands Beach Park are already overcrowded and the other beach parks are many miles to the North. Please consider the fact that now is the time to acquire this shoreline parcel before it is built upon. We may never have his opportunity again. Sincerely, / Michael L.
