Date: November 13. 1998

C
P.O. Box 1436
Honokaa, Hawaii 96727

County Council Finance Committee
Aaron Chung
Chairperson
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Dear Mr. CHUNG:

It has come to my attention that there is a question on whether or not to receive Federal money for marijuana
enforcement efforts, including the eradication program. 1 believe that receiving and using this money for our
county is a vital part of fighting drug usage on our island.
This money has help lots of community members learn more about the dangers of marijuana and how it can
effect our lives dearly. I have grandchildren and I would like to see them grow up in a healthy environment. If
we do not accept these moneys, not only will our community hurt because there will be more marijuana on the
streets but also the education to our people on marijuana will decline.

I know that their are marijuana growers out there that use other people property to grow their supply. How would
you like to own a piece of land and cannot even walk on your property because you're afraid that someone might be
growing marijuana on the property. When it comes down to drugs, people do anything to save what they have
produced. And in Harnakua, you can be sure that more people will be trying to plant marijuana in the eucalyptus
trees that are being grown.
Also, what type of message are we giving to our young people when we don't accept these kinds of Federal money
to help fight the problem of drugs on our island. I know the police department will continue to fight the problems
of marijuana on our island through education and eradication so why not use Federal money to do this. By
accepting these moneys, it is helping our economy as the money is spent here in Hawaii.
I really believe that not accepting these funds will be a big mistake to the island of Hawaii. So please take my
points into consideration.

Sincerely.

r

Rudy H T
Honokaa Community Member

Comm& No. g 9 0A5
111e No.

W.
