No. 1347/Resolution No. 706-08 <br />PLACE: Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa <br />78-128 Ehukai Street <br />Kailua-Kona, Hawaii <br />Council Chambers <br />333 Kilauea Avenue, 2"d Floor <br />Hilo, Hawaii <br />TIME: ]0:30 a.m. <br />Council Chair and Members <br />Hawaii County Council <br />Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br />Your Committee on Public Safety..and Parks and Recreation, to which was referred <br />Resolution No. 706-08, reports as follows: <br />Resolution 706-08, transmitted by Council Member Stacy Higa via Communication No. 1347, <br />dated July 14, 2008, supports the re-dedication of the monument for Alexander Joy Cartwright, <br />Jr., the "Father of Modern Day Baseball,'' and the person who was influential in promoting <br />baseball in Hilo and the Hawaiian Islands. This resolution seeks to replace a missing plaque, <br />produce additional plaques as appropriate, and to re-dedicate the monument at the Francis Wong <br />Stadium in celebration of "Cartwright Day". <br />Public testimony was given by Wayne Subica in support of the resolution. Mr. Subica also <br />provided your Committee members with a brief historical synopsis of the existing monument <br />and about Mr. Cartwright in general. <br />Committee Member Pete Hoffmann said he supported anything related to baseball. Committee <br />Members Dominic Yagong and Emily Naeole stated that they supported the resolution. <br />Committee Member Stacy Higa stated that he was in communication with Mayor Harry Kim <br />regarding the possibility of Mayor Kim declaring August 27 as "Cartwright Day." <br />Committee Member Stacy Higa stated that District 4 Contingency Relief funds would be used, <br />pending approval from Mayor Kim and Parks and Recreation Director Pat Engelhard to pay for <br />related costs. <br />
