REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON PLANNING <br /> <br /> DATE: November 18, 1997 Re: C-573/Resolution No. 183 <br /> <br /> PLACE: Councilroom <br /> <br /> TIME: 2:32 p. m. <br /> <br /> Chair and Members <br /> <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> <br /> Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Resolution No. 183-97 transmitted by <br /> <br /> Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro via Communication No. 573 dated November 4, 1997, reports as <br /> <br /> follows: <br /> <br /> The purpose of Resolution No. 183-97 is to name certain roadways within the Villages of <br /> <br /> La'i opua, Phase 1, Kealakehe, North Kona, Hawaii. This resolution names the following <br /> <br /> roadways in Exhibit "A" of this resolution: <br /> "Ane Keohokalole Highway" in honor of Ane Keohokalole, mother of Queen <br /> Liliuokalani and King Kalakaua and the grandmother of <br /> Princess Kaiulani, the original grantee of the ahupua'a of <br /> Keahuolu, where the roadway will begin. <br /> "Puohulihuli Street" meaning "hill of searching or seeking" as well as being the <br /> name of a peak located between the Kealakehe and <br /> Keahulolu ahupua'a. <br /> "Keanalehu Drive" meaning "the ash cave" as well as being a peak located at <br /> about the 500' elevation within the Village 3 property. <br /> Pursuant to Section 22-35, Article 2, Chapter 22 of the Hawaii County Code, the Council is <br /> authorized to adopt street names for Hawaii County's unnamed roadways. <br /> The Planning Commission recommended favorable consideration for the naming of the <br /> <br /> roadways. However, the transcripts which were provided by the Planning Commission, <br /> revealed their desire to amend the street name of Ane Keohokalole Highway by deleting "Ane" <br /> and adding the macron over the "a" in Keohokalole. This was also expressed by public <br /> testimony at the October 24, 1997 Planning Commission hearing. <br /> Your Committee amended Resolution No. 183-97 to reflect the above recommended changes <br /> from "Ane Keohokalole Highway" to "Keohokalole Highway." <br /> PC REPORT NO. s o <br /> <br />
