REPORT OF THE
COMMITTEE ON PLANNING

DATE: November 18, 1997 Re: C-573/Resolution No. 183

PLACE: Councilroom

TIME: 2:32 p. m.

Chair and Members

Hawaii County Council

Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Resolution No. 183-97 transmitted by

Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro via Communication No. 573 dated November 4, 1997, reports as

follows:

The purpose of Resolution No. 183-97 is to name certain roadways within the Villages of

La'i opua, Phase 1, Kealakehe, North Kona, Hawaii. This resolution names the following

roadways in Exhibit "A" of this resolution:
"Ane Keohokalole Highway" in honor of Ane Keohokalole, mother of Queen
Liliuokalani and King Kalakaua and the grandmother of
Princess Kaiulani, the original grantee of the ahupua'a of
Keahuolu, where the roadway will begin.
"Puohulihuli Street" meaning "hill of searching or seeking" as well as being the
name of a peak located between the Kealakehe and
Keahulolu ahupua'a.
"Keanalehu Drive" meaning "the ash cave" as well as being a peak located at
about the 500' elevation within the Village 3 property.
Pursuant to Section 22-35, Article 2, Chapter 22 of the Hawaii County Code, the Council is
authorized to adopt street names for Hawaii County's unnamed roadways.
The Planning Commission recommended favorable consideration for the naming of the

roadways. However, the transcripts which were provided by the Planning Commission,
revealed their desire to amend the street name of Ane Keohokalole Highway by deleting "Ane"
and adding the macron over the "a" in Keohokalole. This was also expressed by public
testimony at the October 24, 1997 Planning Commission hearing.
Your Committee amended Resolution No. 183-97 to reflect the above recommended changes
from "Ane Keohokalole Highway" to "Keohokalole Highway."
PC REPORT NO. s o
