Angel Pilago, Council Member <br /> <br /> RE: VVV A Resolution Requesting the Mayor to Establish a GMO Advisory Commission <br /> Pursuant to Article IV, Section 4-4, Hawaii County Charter <br /> <br /> Attached is a resolution requesting that the Mayor establish a GMO Advisory Commission in <br /> accordance with article IV, section 4-4 of the Hawaii County Charter. <br /> <br /> The resolution requests the mayor, as elected in the 2008 General Election, to establish a GMO <br /> Advisory Commission for the purpose of furthering research and discussion of genetic engineering <br /> to better understand the pros and cons of this complex issue and determine the appropriatness of <br /> the use of transgenic crops. <br /> <br /> The resolution also recommends that members of the GMO Advisory Commission include, but <br /> not be limited to, the following: the USDA Pacific Basin Agricultural Research Center, the taro <br /> growers assocation, the University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Agriculture, independent coffee <br /> farmers, coffee processors and roasters, organic farmers, the livestock industry, the floral and <br /> ornamental industry, the food industry, a scientist/researcher who favors genetic modification, a <br /> scientist/researcher who opposes genetic modification, and any other organization, industry, or <br /> individual, as the Mayor deems appropriate. <br /> <br /> Please place this resolution on the appropriate Committee agenda for the November 6, 2008 <br /> Committee meeting.
