REPORT OF THE <br />COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC WORKS AND <br />INTERGOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS <br />DATE: November 6, 2008 Re: Comm. No. 1543 <br />PLACE: Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa <br />78-128 Ehukai Street <br />Kailua-Kona, Hawaii <br />TIME: 11:22 a.m. <br />Council Chair and Members <br />Hawaii County Council <br />Hilo, Hawaii 96720 <br />Your Committee on Public Works and Intergovernmental Relations, to which was referred <br />Communication No. 1543, reports as follows: <br />Communication No. 1543, from Mayor Harry Kim, dated October 20, 2008, nominates <br />Mr. Duane Hosaka of Council District 2 to serve on the County of Hawaii Transportation <br />Commission. <br />Mr. Hosaka is a 44-year resident of Hawaii. Since 1994, he has been employed by the County <br />of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation, as a Recreation Director. Mr. Hosaka states that <br />he is not affiliated with any political party and, if confirmed, he will serve a term to expire on <br />December 31, 2009, replacing Ms. Kate Ahia. <br />Mass Transit Agency, Transit Operations Administrator Tom Brown commended Mr. Hosaka <br />for his willingness to serve as a commissioner. He spoke in favor of his nomination, and seeks <br />the support of the Council members. <br />Council member Bob Jacobson stated the importance of improving mass transit services and <br />having the Transportation Commission forward their recommendations toward these <br />improvements to County Council. Furthermore, Council Chair Pete Hoffmann agreed with <br />Mr. Jacobson's comments and encourages expanding the commission's efforts beyond taxi <br />licenses, and added that this vision should also include finding additional Federal funding to <br />continuously support mass transit island wide. <br />The Committee thanked Mc Hosaka for accepting the nomination and agreed that he does not <br />have to appear before full Council for final confirmation. <br />P W I RC RPT NO.
