REPORT OF THE
COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC WORKS AND
INTERGOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS
DATE: November 6, 2008 Re: Comm. No. 1543
PLACE: Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa
78-128 Ehukai Street
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii
TIME: 11:22 a.m.
Council Chair and Members
Hawaii County Council
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Your Committee on Public Works and Intergovernmental Relations, to which was referred
Communication No. 1543, reports as follows:
Communication No. 1543, from Mayor Harry Kim, dated October 20, 2008, nominates
Mr. Duane Hosaka of Council District 2 to serve on the County of Hawaii Transportation
Commission.
Mr. Hosaka is a 44-year resident of Hawaii. Since 1994, he has been employed by the County
of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation, as a Recreation Director. Mr. Hosaka states that
he is not affiliated with any political party and, if confirmed, he will serve a term to expire on
December 31, 2009, replacing Ms. Kate Ahia.
Mass Transit Agency, Transit Operations Administrator Tom Brown commended Mr. Hosaka
for his willingness to serve as a commissioner. He spoke in favor of his nomination, and seeks
the support of the Council members.
Council member Bob Jacobson stated the importance of improving mass transit services and
having the Transportation Commission forward their recommendations toward these
improvements to County Council. Furthermore, Council Chair Pete Hoffmann agreed with
Mr. Jacobson's comments and encourages expanding the commission's efforts beyond taxi
licenses, and added that this vision should also include finding additional Federal funding to
continuously support mass transit island wide.
The Committee thanked Mc Hosaka for accepting the nomination and agreed that he does not
have to appear before full Council for final confirmation.
P W I RC RPT NO.
