. -

.

.

COUNTY OF HAWAII

STATE OF HAWAII

RESOLUTION NO.~
(DRAFT 2)

A RESOLUTION HONORING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. ON HIS
BIRTHDAY

WHEREAS, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream lives on in the hearts and spirits of

many Americans who have heard his moving plea, part of which is:

...I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American
Dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its
creed--we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, sons of former
slaves and sons of former slave-owners will be able to sit down together at the
table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day, even the state of Mississippi, a state
sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression,
will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream my four little children will one day live in a nation where
they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by content of their
character.. ..

WHEREAS, on January 20, 1997, the State of Hawaii will commemorate Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr.'s birthday as an official state holiday; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii recognizes and esteems Dr. King for championing civil rights and
for advancing interracial harmony among all people; and
WHEREAS, Dr. King's leadership in and dedication to defending fundamental civil
liberties and privileges have inspired us to reaffirm the American ideals of freedom, justice,
and opportunity for everyone; and
WHEREAS, the people and the Council of the County of Hawaii are deeply pleased to
join many others across our country in memorializing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday
and in honoring this great American's vision and work for peace for all.
