<br />- -- ---------~ -- -------- --- ---.- <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />COUNTY OF HAWAII <br /> <br />STATE OF HAWAII <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 53 97 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING FUNDING TO HELP DEFRAY THE COST OF <br />SENDING PARTICIPANTS TO THE 1997 SPECIAL OLYMPICS SUMMER GAMES. <br /> <br />Whereas, the East Hawaii Chapter of the Special Olympics is a worthwhile <br />organization that provides year round sports training and athletic competition for all <br />children and adults with mental retardation; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the East Hawaii Chapter of the Special Olympics promotes activities <br />which furnish continuing opportunities for participants to develop physical fitness, courage <br />and valuable social skills; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the mission of the East Hawaii Chapter of the Special Olympics as weD as <br />the interllational organization of the Special Olympics is to help people with mental <br />retardation to be openly and freely accepted into larger society; and <br /> <br />Whereas, they strive to achieve this commendable objective by organizing and <br />taking part in both local and Statewide Olympic Games; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the next Statewide Games, the 1997 Summer Games, will be held in May <br />at the the University of Hawaii at Manoa; and <br /> <br />Whereas, the East Hawaii Chapter of the Special Olympics would like to send a <br />total of 80 delegates to participate at these games; and <br /> <br />Whereas, in order to do such, they are in need of $6,000 to defray the travel cost to <br />the games, which is estimated at $18,000. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY <br />OF HAW All that it is in the public interest to ensure that the East Hawaii Chapter of the <br />Special Olympics has the opportunity to participate in this event by appropriating funds to <br />help diminish travel cost for Hilo participants. <br />
