<br />... ----ill <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />COUNTY OF HAWAII <br /> <br />STATE OF HAWAII <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. <br /> <br />7~ <br /> <br />9.Z- <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE RELOCATION OF THE HA WAIl COMMUNITY <br />COLLEGE CAMPUS TO THE DOWNTOWN HILO AREA. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Downtown Hilo area is comprised of twelve square blocks of historic <br />commercial buildings and residences; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Downtown Hilo area has suffered from a number of commercial <br />vacancies due to Hawaii's sluggish economy, retirement of merchants and changing market <br />demands; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there remains a steadfast core of professional offices, retail shops, <br />restaurants, and recreational amenities within the area; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, due to its own limited and deteriorating facility on Manono Street, the <br />Hawaii Community College shares classroom space within the University of Hawaii at Hilo <br />campus; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, both the Hawaii Community College and the University of Hawaii at Hilo <br />are at a level of growth which requires additional classroom space to meet their expanding <br />student populations and program needs; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, initial discussions with the State Executive Branch, the administrations of <br />the University of Hawaii and the Hawaii Community College and the Hilo Downtown <br />Improvement Association have resulted in positive projections for the potential relocation of the <br />Community College to Downtown Hilo; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the proposed relocation would offer a win-win situation to the Hawaii <br />Community College and the University by allowing each to expand its own programs, and the <br />merchants and property owners in Downtown Hilo would benefit from the economic stimulation <br />that would result from such a move; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, monies have been earmarked for new classroom construction, which might <br />be redirected to planning and implementing the relocation of the Community College to <br />Downtown Hilo. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF <br />HA WAIl that it does hereby extend its unequivocal support to the further pursuit of relocating <br />the Hawaii Community College to Downtown Hilo. <br />
