<br />.....---~ .. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />COUNTY OF HAWAII <br /> <br />STATE OF HAWAII <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 149 97 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES IN MEMORY OF <br />THE LATE WILLIAM SEIZO KAWAHARA <br /> <br />WHEREAS, former Hawaii County Councilman William Seizo Kawahara, of <br />Waiaha-Kona, died on August 5, 1997, at the age of82; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mr. Kawahara served for a total of twelve continuous years on the <br />Hawaii County Council as the North and South Kona District Councilman from <br />1972 through 1984; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mr. Kawahara, most commonly known as "Farmer Bill", strongly advocated <br />careful planning and controlled development for Kona; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mr. Kawahara was admired for his generosity and unselfishness to <br />community service in which, under his leadership, the Big Island received critical improvements <br />including a major seaport at Kawaihae, a modem coastal highway from Kona International <br />Airport to Kawaihae which opened the North Kohala to Kailua-Kona "Gold Coast", and direct <br />mainland air service to Kona; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mr. Kawahara helped to improve public recreational opportunities for Kona <br />residents by his support for and naming of the "Harold K. Higashihara Park"; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mr. Kawahara demonstrated his strong commitment to children and their <br />safety by initiating the planning and construction of the Palani Pedestrian Overpass; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Mr. Kawahara wished to protect and enhance the natural beauty ofKona <br />and, towards this end, regularly provided free seedlings of native trees and plants to interested <br />citizens throughtout the community; and <br />
