No. 98 <br /> <br />Your Committee on Environmental Management, to which was referred Communication No. 98, <br />reports as follows: <br /> <br />Communication 98 from Mayor Billy Kenoi dated January 7,2009, requests confirmation of the <br />appointment of Lono Tyson as County of Hawai'i Director of the Department of Environmental <br />Management, which appointment was effective January 2, 2009. Communication No. 98 notes that <br />Mr. Tyson was the Solid Waste Division Chief for the County's Department of Environmental <br />Management from 2003 to 2005 and has more than 15 years experience in Waste Management <br />planning, engineering, design, permitting, construction, operation and maintenance of solid waste. <br /> <br />Pursuant to Article VI, ~ 6-5.3, Hawai'i County Charter, the Director of Environmental Management <br />shall be appointed by the Mayor, confirmed by the Council, may be removed by the Mayor, and shall <br />have a minimum of five years administrative experience in a related field. <br /> <br />At the February 3, 2009 meeting of the Committee on Environmental Management, Lono Tyson was <br />present and expressed his vision and summary of priorities and proposals relating to resolving <br />ongoing solid waste issues, landfill capacity, and waste to energy technology, noting his desire not to <br />repeat past mistakes. Mr. Tyson agreed with Councilmember Yagong's comments that one very <br />necessary and important component in developing proposed waste reduction technology is to ensure <br />open and inclusive community involvement in the entire process. <br /> <br />Your Committee on Environmental Management recommends the confirmation of Mr. Lono Tyson <br />as County of Hawai'i Director of the Department of Environmental Management.
