COUNTY OF HAWAII <br />STATE OF HAWAII <br />RESOLUTION NO. 67 09 <br />(Draft 2) <br />A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAT THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND <br />NATURAL RESOURCES ABANDON ANY EFFORT AND/OR PLAN TO ERADICATF, <br />FERAL CATTLE WITHIN THE HONUA`ULA FOREST RESERVE LOCATED ON <br />THE SLOPES OF HUALALAI BY HELICOPTER HUNT. <br />WHEREAS, the cattle industry is an important part of the agricultural foundation of the <br />Hawaii Island and the industry is economically threatened; and <br />WHEREAS, portrayal of the cattle industry as damaging to our ecosystem further <br />diminishing its chance for survival; and <br />WHEREAS, the proposed shooting of cattle in recovered pasture land is unacceptably <br />dangerous to hikers and adjoining property owners; and <br />WHEREAS, the effectiveness of the mission of this program has not been demonstrated <br />as valid and this procedure is questionable at best; now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the <br />State of Hawaii, Department of Land and Natural Resources abandon any effort and/or plan to <br />shoot feral cattle within the Honua`ula Forest Reserve located on the slopes of Hualalai from <br />helicopters as proposed; and <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Land and Natural Resources <br />work with the Cattlemen's Association and various conservation groups to establish a safer, <br />humane, and effective process for achieving success in their mission; and <br />
