COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII <br /> RESOLUTION NO: 281-00 Draft 2 <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ACCEPTANCE OF A DONATION OF AN "OJIZO-SAMA" <br /> STATUE. <br /> WHEREAS, the Japanese Community Association of Hawaii has donated an <br /> <br /> "Ojizo-Sama" statue to the County of Hawaii to be placed in the Lili`uokalani Gardens in Hilo, <br /> Hawaii; and <br /> WHEREAS, Jizo Bosatsu (Bodhisattva Jizo) is one of the most popular religious figures <br /> in Japanese Buddhist lore and is affectionately known as "Ojizo-Sama". It is best known as the <br /> guardian of children and the special protector of children who die at a young age. In addition, <br /> <br /> Jizo Bosatsu is considered to be the protector of travelers and his statues are often enshrined <br /> along busy roadways; and <br /> WHEREAS, the ornamental statue will enhance the appearance of Lili`uokalani Gardens, <br /> an authentic Japanese park which concept began in 1914, and will be recognized by many of the <br /> visitors from the Orient; and <br /> WHEREAS, the donation, with an approximate value of One Thousand Five Hundred <br /> and No/100 ($1,500.00), will be used by the Department of Parks and Recreation at its <br /> Lili`uokalani Gardens; and <br /> WHEREAS, Article XIII, Section 13-12 of the Hawaii County Charter provides that the <br /> Council, on behalf of the County, may accept gifts of donations of money, securities, or other <br /> personal property or of real estate or any interest in real estate. <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF <br /> HAWAII that in accordance with Article XIII, Section 13-12 ofthe Hawaii County Charter, the <br /> Department of Parks and Recreation is authorized to accept the "Ojizo-Sama" statue. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this donation would be assigned to Lili`uokalani <br /> Gardens of the Department of Pazks and Recreation to benefit the people of the Island of <br /> Hawaii. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk is hereby directed to forward <br /> copies of this resolution to Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro, Juliette Tulang, Director of the <br /> Department of Parks and Recreation and the Japanese Community Association of Hawaii. <br /> <br />
