AND MRS. 'EARL BAKKEN' <br /> <br />WH;EREAS, Earl and Doris Bakken have indicated their wish to donate seven.(7) <br />Lifepak 500 Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) manufactured by Physio-Control <br />Corporation, valued approximately in the amount of $24,500, to the County of Hawai'i <br />for use by county fire department personnel stationed at Waikoloa, Laupahoehoe,'. . <br />Hawaiian Paradise Park, Pahala, Waiakea, Kaumana and Kaiulani stations, respectively; <br />. and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, studies have shown that cardiopulmonary failure is a leading cause <br />of sudden death and prompt use of portable defibrillators can more than double the <br />survival rate of cardiac arrest victims; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a medical/scientific statement issued by the American Heart <br />Association and endorsed .by the Board of Trustees of the American College of <br />Cardiology in 1997 stated that."autbmatic external defibrillators that accurately analyze <br />cardiac rhythms and, if appropriate, advise/deliver an electric. countershock. .. are widely <br />used by trained emergency personnel (EMT paramedics arid first responders, such as ..' <br />firefighters and police personnel)" ...and "have proved accurate andetIective and have <br />become an essential link in the 'chain of survival' as defined by the American Heart <br />Association"; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, deployment of this portable technology throughout the isl~d of <br />Hawai'i will greatly enhance the life-saving response capabilities of trained county <br />personnel; and .., <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Dr. Earl Bakken and his wife, Doris Bakken, have made <br />extraordinary contributions to the establishment of the North Hawai'i Community <br />Hospital and the Five Mountain Medical Community to enhance the health and well- <br />being of Hawai'i County residents, and have richly contributed to Hawai'i's strategic <br />leadership and reputation as America's "health state." <br />
