Currently, I
work with the DARE program at Kohala Elementary School. I teach tennis to 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders.
I notice many youngsters overweight and some extremely overweight. These individuals have a hard
time participating even in a limited capacity. We, as a society, need to take a serious look at what foods
are available to our children throughout the day, but especially during school hours. Schools should be
a place where children are exposed to the best that life has to offer. On career day, the school
invites firefights, police officers, executives, and even politicians to encourage the kids to create career
goals. We don't invite porn stars and strippers, even though some individuals make a living that
way. We should act the same way with food, kids should be exposed to locally grown fresh fruits
and vegetables, not food stuffs from a can and microwavable meals from the industrial
food conglomerate. In Kohala, we have many farmers who struggle to find a market for their products,
how come we can't get their products into the local schools. It seems so simple, GET LOCALLY
GROWN FOOD INTO THE LOCAL SCHOOLS AND KIDS WILL BE HEALTHIER!
Comm No. ! ( 3 .3
Ref. To: C_ ^u
Ref. Date A
