COUNTY OF HAWAICI •4 Siff STATE OF HAWAII <br /> ♦� oi'xi1 -: <br /> BILL NO. 259 <br /> ORDINANCE NO. <br /> AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 18, ARTICLE 4, DIVISION 1, SECTION <br /> 18 -90, HAWAII COUNTY CODE 1983 (2005 EDITION, AS AMENDED), RELATING <br /> TO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. <br /> BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII: <br /> SECTION 1. Chapter 18, article 4, division 1, section 18 -90, Hawai`i County Code <br /> 1983 (2005 Edition, as amended), is amended by amending subsection (h) to read as follows: <br /> "(h) Island -wide transportation [free] zone. <br /> (1) The purpose of this subsection is to provide the public with a transportation <br /> alternative to the private automobile. The provision of an effective public <br /> transportation system for the residents of the County of Hawai`i will produce <br /> economic, social, and lifestyle benefits for the residents of Hawai`i County. The <br /> distances residents must travel for work, medical, education, and social needs will <br /> be alleviated by providing public transportation at [ne] a reduced cost to [the <br /> user.] the majority of riders. <br /> (2) The County of Hawai`i shall be designated a transportation kokua zone. Riders <br /> boarding and alighting any regularly scheduled bus route operated by the County <br /> of Hawai`i or its designee shall [ride free of charge.] be charged a nominal fee of <br /> $1 per ride effective July 1, 2010, with the exception of the following persons as <br /> defined in section 18 -1, who shall ride free of charge: <br /> (A) Handicapped; <br /> (B) Senior citizen; and <br /> (C) Student. <br /> (3) The transportation kokua zone shall not apply to County contracted shared -ride <br /> taxi services, County operated curb to curb van services, or County operated <br /> non - scheduled bus services. <br /> (4) The County wide transportation kokua zone shall terminate on June 30, 2011 [T]. <br /> unless amended by the council. <br /> - - - ] Between ninety and <br /> sixty days prior to June 30, 2011, the transit administrator shall report to the <br /> council on the impact of the implementation of this amended transportation kokua <br /> zone, which charges a nominal fee of $1 per ride with the exception of certain <br /> riders as provided in paragraph (2) of this subsection." <br />
