No. 363-10 PLACE: Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort& Hotel 78-128 `Ehukai Street Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i TIME: 3:21 p.m. Council Chair and Members Hawai`i County Council Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 The Committee on Human Services and Economic Development, to which was referred Resolution No. 363-10, reports as follows: Resolution No. 363-10, transmitted by Council Member Kelly Greenwell, via Communication No. 862, dated July 7, 2010, a resolution recommending that the Department of Land and Natural Resources disallow the collection of reef fish for export in the waters surrounding the Island of Hawai`i. This matter was first heard on July 20, 2010. At that meeting, Mr. Hoffmann reminded Committee Members that a previous resolution which he introduced, Res. 308-10, was written to convey to the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) recommendations by the West Hawai`i Fisheries Council to create guidelines for the aquarium industry. He added that he would like to try to regulate the aquarium industry first before enacting a complete ban, as Res. 363-10 is requesting. He concluded by asking that Res. 308-10 be given a chance in its revised form before acting on Res. 363-10, and requested Res. 363-10 be postponed. Discussion ensued regarding the reef fish collection industry and continued regarding the livelihood of the industry and allowing the compromises already established from a previous resolution to develop.
