P roclamation <br />Whereas, Kumejima and Hawaii Island share many commonalities; <br />Whereas, Kumejima and Hawaii Island are said to be the most beautiful islands in their <br />respective chains; <br />Whereas, Kumejima and Hawaii Island have both relied on the economies of sugar cane and <br />tourism to support their populations; <br />Whereas, the isolation of Okinawa and Hawaii by the Pacific Ocean have made it imperative <br />for both places to achieve self - sufficiency, <br />Whereas, Kumejima and Hawaii Island are two of the few locations in the world where a <br />deep -sea pipe has the ability to bring up cold sea water; <br />Whereas, the applications of these assets have the potential to meet three of the world's most <br />pressing needs: food, clean energy and fresh water; <br />NOW THEREFORE, 1, WILLIAM P. KENOI, Mayor of the County of Hawaii, State of Hawaii, <br />U.S.A., do hereby invite the beautiful Island of Kumejima, Okinawa, ,Japan, to accept a sister <br />city relationship with our equally beautiful Hawaii Island. Furthermore, upon acceptance of <br />this invitation by the government of Kumejima, the Office of the Mayor of the County of <br />Hawaii will introduce a resolution to the Hawaii County Council to formally recognize this <br />relationship as a law of the County of Hawaii. <br />IN WITNESS WHEREOF, 1 have hereunto set my hand and caused The Seal of the County of <br />Hawaii to be affixed.
