REPORT OF THE <br />COMMITTEE ON PLANNING <br />DATE: November 1, 2011 <br />PLACE: Council Chambers <br />Hilo, Hawai`i <br />TIME: 8:30 a.m. <br />Council Chair and Members <br />Hawai`i County Council <br />Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 <br />Re: Comm. No. 422 <br />Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Comm. No. 422, reports as follows: <br />Communication No. 422, from Mayor William P. Kenoi, dated October 10, 2011, requests <br />confirmation of the appointment of Jay Uyeda of Council District 8 to the County of Hawaii <br />Water Board. Mr. Uyeda is a 39 -year resident of Hawai`i. He presently is the Director of <br />Development at the Hualalai Resort. <br />Mr. Uyeda is a member of the Hawai`i Planning Conference and the Hawai`i Society of <br />Professional Engineers. He states that he is a Democrat. If confirmed, he will replace Joe <br />Reynolds, who resigned and whose term was to end on December 31, 2011. Mr. Uyeda will be <br />eligible to be re- appointed at that time for a full five -year term to end on December 31, 2016. <br />Executive Assistant to the Mayor Charmaine Shigemura introduced Mr. Uyeda who was present <br />at the West Hawai`i Civic Center. <br />Council Member Pilago spoke in firm support of Mr. Uyeda due to his clear and strong <br />community support and service record. <br />Mr. Uyeda stated that he was born and raised in Hawaii and he believes his education and <br />knowledge will add to the Water Board. <br />Council Member Ford stated that she believes Mr. Uyeda is a strong candidate but she feels the <br />Mayor is nominating too many development oriented candidates. She further stated that she is <br />concerned that the Water Board will not be a balanced broad spectrum of community members. <br />PC Rept. No.: 32 <br />
