Purpose of the SMA Permit <br />• The SMA permit was established in 1975 with the enactment of Act <br />176, the Shoreline Protection Act <br />• Special controls on developments within an area along the shoreline to <br />avoid permanent losses of valuable resources and the foreclosure of <br />management options <br />• As a management tool - assures that "development" in the SMA are <br />designed and carried out in compliance with the CZM objectives and <br />policies, and the SMA guidelines <br />Oral Minh. <br />OaNYt iota Mragamen! <br />County Authorities on the SMA Permit <br />• Four counties play a key role in regulating developments in the SMA <br />• The SMA boundaries were delineated by the county authorities <br />• The SMA is much smaller than the CZM area <br />• The county authorities are the County Planning Commissions, except on <br />Oahu where it is the City Council <br />• <br />Coastal Zona Management <br />8 <br />
