...... <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII ' / • STATE OF HAWAII <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 228 12 <br /> A RESOLUTION URGING THE HAWAII STATE LEGISLATURE TO APPROPRIATE <br /> FUNDS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN ADULT DAY CARE FACILITY IN HILO. <br /> WHEREAS, according to the Hawaii State Plan on Aging, by 2035 the older adult <br /> population in Hawaii (projected to be 474,586 individuals, 60 years or older) will represent <br /> 29.7% of the total population, a 310.3% increase during the 55 year period from 1980—2035; and <br /> WHEREAS, during the same 55 year period the total population is projected to increase <br /> 65.1%while the population aged 85 and older will increase 1157.5%, illustrating decreasing <br /> mortality rates and greater life expectancy; and <br /> WHEREAS, Hawaii Island Adult Care, which runs the Hilo Adult Day Center; is a <br /> 501(c)(3)Non-Profit organization whose purpose is to provide community based care of the daily <br /> life needs of frail elders, Alzheimer's patients, and physically or mentally challenged individuals; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS,preventing premature institutionalization in long-term or acute care facilities <br /> allows these individuals the opportunity to continue living in their own homes, providing dignity <br /> and self-worth and helps these individuals maintain independence; and <br /> WHEREAS, the programs offer a variety of supervised group activities designed to <br /> promote independence, personal growth and enjoyment, and is structured according to their <br /> individual abilities, needs and interests; and <br /> WHEREAS, the all-day programs provide a much needed respite for caregivers and the <br /> opportunity for family caregivers to continue working; and <br /> WHEREAS,the Hilo Adult Day Center currently leases the old Hilo Memorial Hospital, <br /> which was constructed in 1924, on a month to month basis to offer services to its 105 clients; and <br /> WHEREAS,the Hawai`i Island Community Development Corporation is a 50l(c)(3)non- <br /> profit organization which has developed over 400 affordable housing units for low income <br /> families on Hawaii Island; and <br /> WHEREAS,the Hawai`i Island Community Development Corporation proposes the <br /> construction of a new functional and modern facility to be integrated into the Mohouli Senior <br /> complex being developed in Hilo, designed to meet the needs of the community for decades to <br /> come; now, therefore, <br />
