AGING <br /> AGING <br /> Program Highlights <br /> The Office of Aging carried out the following major projects and/or initiatives: <br /> • Broadened the scope of services by including case management services on site. <br /> In May 2011, Services for Seniors filled this important service piece of the service <br /> spectrum. Hawai`i Center for Independent Living took a step up(stairs) and is <br /> now in a larger space on the second floor with better facilities to serve their target <br /> population. The ADRC facility is now complete with dedication of its resource <br /> room with information and materials on aging and disability issues and services. <br /> Dedicated in September 2010,the Sally Leilani Wehrsig Resource Library honors <br /> the vision of the Hawai`i County Office of Aging's past Care Giver Specialist <br /> who tirelessly advocated for and educated others on care giving needs. <br /> • Developed video conferencing capacity and is now able to link to different sites <br /> on the island for education and interaction with individuals and families. <br /> Community partnerships have increased with seven new Memorandum of <br /> Agreements with the ADRC: State of Hawai`i Division of Vocational <br /> Rehabilitation and Services to the Blind, Easter Seals Society, Food Basket, <br /> Hawai`i Island Rural Health Association, Ke Anuenue Area Health Education <br /> Center, Project Dana and Special Olympics Hawai`i. <br /> • Collaborated with the Alzheimer's Association, Life Care Center of Kona, and <br /> Services for Seniors to provide a `Hands-On Training for Caregivers' for 15 <br /> family caregivers at the Life Care Center of Kona. The Office of Aging also held <br /> a conference for 43 family caregivers at the Aging and Disability Resource Center <br /> and supported 15 caregiver workshops and 6 in-home counseling sessions for <br /> families dealing with caregiving for those with Alzheimer's disease or related <br /> dementias. The workshops included the following topics: What is Alzheimer's <br /> Disease?, Maintaining Your Brain, 10 Warning Signs of Dementia, Legal and <br /> Financial Affairs in Dementia, and Challenging Behaviors in Dementia Care. <br /> • Sponsored eight (8) Elder Abuse Awareness presentations around Hawai`i County <br /> with 257 older individuals, caregivers, the general public, and community and <br /> aging network providers receiving much needed information on Elder Abuse. All <br /> types of abuse were covered during these awareness activities including sexual <br /> abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, neglect or self-neglect and financial <br /> exploitation. <br /> 8 <br />
