M7 os N '
COUNTY OF HAWAII :+_ '/:•': STATE OF HAWAII
RESOLUTION NO. 257 12
A RESOLUTION ENCOURAGING THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF HAWAII
TO APPROPRIATE NECESSARY FUNDING FOR THE PLANNING AND
CONSTRUCTION OF TWO CARDIOLOGY TRAUMA CENTERS ON THE ISLAND
OF HAWAII.
WHEREAS, statistically a heart attack occurs every twenty seconds, heart-related deaths
occur every minute, and of the 1.5 million people who experience heart attacks, five hundred
thousand results in death; and
WHEREAS, at 9.3 per 1,000 population, Hawai`i Island has the highest rate of
cardiology hospitalization in comparison to that of Kaua`i (7.7 per 1,000 population), Maui (7.5
per 1,000 population), and O`ahu, the lowest (6.7 per 1,000 population); and
WHEREAS, in 2008 the State of Hawai`i experienced five hundred fifty-eight more
cardiology-related hospitalizations than in 1995; and
WHEREAS, cardiology-related hospitalizations that occur on the Island of Hawai`i are
the highest in the state and frequently require that patients be flown from Hawai`i to Oahu for
necessary medical attention which includes time expended for ground and air transportation; and
WHEREAS,the high rate of cardiology-related incidents on Hawai`i Island, the vast
geographical expanse of the island, and the need for quick access to obtain cardiac-related
treatment, would justify the need for construction of cardiac trauma centers located in the
vicinity of Waimea and Puna; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that it
encourages the Honorable Neil Abercrombie, Governor of the State of Hawai`i, to appropriate
necessary funding for the planning and construction of two cardiac trauma centers on the Island
of Hawaii.
