E <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII -• �:" �•- STATE OF HAWAII• <br /> •+a .-=Meg..,; <br /> ♦,art O;•Aks. - <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 259 12 <br /> RESOLUTION REQUESTING AN ISLAND-WIDE PLAN FOR THE EXPANSION OF <br /> HELE-ON BUS STOP SHELTERS. <br /> WHEREAS, Bus stop shelters for the general public and students aged five to eighteen <br /> are needed on the Island of Hawai`i; and <br /> WHEREAS, Many students and public riders cannot afford vehicles to transport them to <br /> his/her destination; and <br /> WHEREAS, Students and the general public are increasingly dependent upon Hele-On <br /> buses for daily and other travel; and <br /> WHEREAS, Hazardous and severe weather conditions occur day and night, including <br /> fog, hail, thunder lightening, flash floods, heavy rain; and <br /> WHEREAS, Bus stop shelters are lacking in many Hele-On routes, which is a health risk <br /> for those using the buses; and <br /> WHEREAS, The general public and students are at risk from heavy traffic along bus <br /> routes; and <br /> WHEREAS, Bus stop shelters along the Hele-On routes would help to contribute to <br /> public safety and prevent possible risk and liability to the County of Hawaii and the State of <br /> Hawai`i, and <br /> WHEREAS, Hele-On bus ridership has increased exponentially in the past several years; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, The cost to construct a bus stop shelter ranges from $27,000— $35,000; <br /> now therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII,that the <br /> Department of Public Works create a plan to expand the number of Bus Stop Shelters along <br /> Hele-On bus routes in the County of Hawai`i. <br />
