Submitted by Ian Kami P/COUNCIL
RE: Bill 156
change z
To: Hawaii County Council and Hawaii County Planning Department
Subject: Stop the Zoning Change to Ag-1 in the Pana'ewa Farm Lots
Subdivision
Letter: Greetings,
I just signed the following petition addressed to: Hawaii County Council
and Hawaii County Planning Department.
•
e)
Stop the Zoning Change to Ag-1 in the Pana'ewa Farm Lots Subdivtjon
Nationwide, there are over 285,000,000 mouths to feed...while lesadhan=
1% claim "Farming" as an occupation.
(www.epa.gov/agriculture/ag101/demographics.html). In Hawaii, we
import 85% of our food (Rocky Mountain Institute. 2007. Island of Hawaii
Whole System Project Phase I Report). With the ever-climbing prices of
petroleum there will come a point that it will become too expensive to
eat/be healthy. The Hawaii 2050 Sustainability Plan states that: "Hawaii
has all the necessary assets to significantly improve the state's energy and
food sustainability...if appropriate personal resources and funding are
used wisely." The CDC states that 1 in 3 children born after 2000 will have
Type II Diabetes; 1 in 150 children will be diagnosed somewhere on the
autism spectrum. These are just some of the now common diseases that
• correlate to the fact that the U.S. (per capita), spends the most money on
medicine and the least on food in the entire world. In 2004, the Governor
had to enact State Bill 2246, in response to the urban sprawl that
innocently enters but soon trys to limit agricultural activities so close to
their new homes. Over 1.3 million acres are already paved in America each
year; twice the size of our State! Please aid this community in stopping
what is a harbinger of urban-sprawl. Help us feed you...one day you might
not have anywhere else to turn! You can aid in keeping this community
from becoming the: Pana'ewa Farm "Lost" Subdivision.
A PROMINENT LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER HAS OWNED A 12-ACRE PROPERTY
FOR 30 YEARS IN OUR COMMUNITY AND HAS DONE NOTHING WITH IT. HE
NOW WANTS THE ZONING LAWS CHANGED TO ALLOW HIM TO SUBDIVIDE
INTO 1 ACRE LOTS AND SELL THEM OFF. IN 2008 THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY
FILLED THE COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING TO EXPRESS OUR UNANIMOUS
DISAGREEMENT TO THE THEN 1/2 ACRE PROPOSAL. THIS FIRST ATTEMPT
SHOWS THE UNDERLYING DISREGARD FOR AG-USE...AND THIS AFFECTS ALL
OF US!
Sincerely,
4 Comm. No. 11.
Ref. To: UV ._..
Ref. Date ' I 1
