Corp state program, Planning Committee,
introducer: Ford
Dear council members,
I support the resolution 303-12 introduced by Brenda Ford.
Geothermal development in populated areas is potentially toxic and dangerous in many
ways, including leaks of toxic gasses, potentially creating earthquakes in an unstable area,
contamination of groundwater and oceans, creation and storage of toxic waste, and the potential
for accidents that require massive evacuations.
These things must be studied in detail.
An EIS must be required in every project related to developing geothermal power. Public
input must be required before approving projects.
The Public Land Development Corporation needs to be abolished, as it is deeply flawed in
its conception and execution of its actions, and is likely to meet many legal challenges.
Furthermore, it is not a long term solution. A much cheaper option would be to change the
legislation to allow Helco to create a 'smart grid' that allows owners who invest in their
own solar or alternative energy to 'sell' their excess back to the system.
Currently Helco only allows this until the meter turns to zero. A smart grid would allow
property owners to be the power plant.
A wide distribution of power sources would also be more stable in the event of a natural
disaster than a concentrated geothermal plant.
Please encourage a smart grid and checks to owners for producing extra electricity.
Thank you,
Mojo Mustapha(Pahoa)
Comm.
