P1PwPR ,
12e5 3)2-12
Murashige, Laura COWA n4
From: Malamatree [malamatree @gmail.com]
Sent: Sunday, September 30, 2012 2:00 PM
To: counciltestimony@co.hawaii.hi.us
Subject: Testimony: Resolution 301-12 and a request for modification
> Aloha Council Members,
> I am writing to support Resolution 301-12 to enable "sustainable living research sites" .
I am a resident of Puna and moved here to be able to live more sustainably. My Partner
Paul and I have been working to develop our property by planting food trees, gardens etc.
We built a cabin in which we live and our efforts to develop our sustainable lifestyle
would benefit from having some more flexibility than the current building code allows.
> However, I'd like to request that the 15 acre size limit be increased to 25 acres. Our
property of 24 acres is approximately two thirds forest (-15 acres) which we would like in
time to restore to native and to develop some sustainable agroforestry. The remaining 9
acres are where we are planting fruit trees and developing small permaculture farm.
> An example of where some more flexibility would be helpful is that we would like to be
able to have family members come stay with us to help and current building code says that
if we build additional detached bedrooms for them, they need to be less than 50 ft away
from our cabin. . . It seems crazy to have us all huddled together on a property of this
size to meet the permit regulations. We'd also like to use more sustainable materials and
methods for the buildings than we did for our (permitted) 500 sq ft cabin.
> Thank you for bringing this resolution forward. I appreciate the work that you do to
help residents of Hawai'i County, and I hope that you can please modify the lot-size
requirement so that we too can benefit from this effort.
> Mahalo,
> Suzanne Wakelin
YV
Comm.
