:41.7 M ' . <br /> .Glib . <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII -•_�: % STATE OF HAWAIGI <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 77 13 <br /> A RESOLUTION URGING THE HAWAII STATE LEGISLATURE TO <br /> APPROPRIATE FUNDS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW ELLISON S. <br /> ONIZUKA SPACE CENTER AT THE KONA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, ISLAND <br /> OF HAWAII. <br /> WHEREAS, the Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center is a nonprofit educational facility <br /> established in 1991 to commemorate Colonel Ellison S. Onizuka, U.S. Air Force, who lost his <br /> life aboard the space shuttle, Challenger, on January 28, 1986, along with six other American <br /> astronauts; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center is currently located at the Kona <br /> International Airport and was built with funding from the Department of Transportation; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center is dedicated to reaching out to children <br /> and adults to further their understanding of science and space; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Center's interactive exhibits and videos tell the history of manned space <br /> flights, physics, and daily life in space; and <br /> WHEREAS, the overall master plan for the expansion of the Kona International Airport <br /> involves the relocation of the Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center to a different area of the airport; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, relocating the Center would provide additional space within the airport's <br /> central location, allowing the airport to earn more revenue; and <br /> WHEREAS, the proposed facility, which will be approximately 5,500 square feet, is <br /> expected to be completed in 2014 and will include exhibit spaces, an auditorium, classrooms, <br /> and conference rooms; and <br /> WHEREAS, House Bill No. 1468 provides for an appropriation for fiscal year 2013- <br /> 2014 in the amount of$3,000,000 to be expended by the Department of Transportation for the <br /> construction of a new Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the <br /> Hawai`i State Legislature is urged to appropriate funds for the construction of a new Ellison S. <br /> Onizuka Space Center at the Kona International Airport, Island of Hawai`i. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Governor of the State of Hawai`i is urged to <br /> release funds for the construction of the new Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center. <br />
