A RESOLUTION URGING THE STATE OF HAWAII DEPARTMENT OF <br /> TRANSPORTATION TO RENAME THE SADDLE ROAD IN HONOR OF DANIEL K. <br /> INOUYE. <br /> WHEREAS, Daniel K. Inouye was elected as the United States Senator from Hawai`i in <br /> 1962, and re-elected in 1968, 1974, 1980, 1986, 1992, 1998, 2004 and 2010; and <br /> WHEREAS, Senator Inouye was chair of the Appropriations Committee and President Pro <br /> Tempore at the time of his death on December 17, 2012; and <br /> WHEREAS, Senator Inouye represented the people of Hawai`i and the nation honestly and <br /> to the best of his ability; and <br /> WHEREAS, Senator Inouye used his seniority and influence during his nearly 50 years in <br /> the Senate to help Hawai`i benefit from federal expenditures relating to national defense, <br /> transportation, higher education, astronomy, agriculture, economic development and community <br /> development; and <br /> WHEREAS, Senator Inouye directed federal funds to Hawai`i for the realignment of State <br /> Route 200, known as the Saddle Road; and <br /> WHEREAS, the completed Saddle Road will support national defense, transportation, <br /> astronomy, agriculture, economic development and community development; and <br /> WHEREAS, upon completion of the realignment of the Saddle Road, the State of Hawai`i <br /> Department of Transportation will have sole jurisdiction over the highway; and <br /> WHEREAS, Hawai`i Senate Resolution No. 21, Hawai`i Senate Concurrent Resolution No. <br /> 43, and House Concurrent Resolution No. 42 request the State of Hawai`i Department of <br /> Transportation, when appropriate, to rename the Saddle Road the "Daniel K. Inouye Legacy <br /> Highway"; and <br /> WHEREAS, the renaming of the Saddle Road would not affect the status of federal or state <br /> funding for ongoing and future construction; and <br /> WHEREAS, the renaming of the Saddle Road is an appropriate and permanent way to <br /> remind users of the highway of the legacy of Senator Inouye; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the <br /> State of Hawai`i Department of Transportation is urged to rename the Saddle Road in honor of <br /> Daniel K. Inouye. <br /> BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall transmit a copy of this <br /> resolution to the Honorable Governor Neil Abercrombie, the Honorable Senate President Donna <br /> Mercado Kim, the Honorable Speaker of the House of Representatives Joe Souki, Department of <br /> Transportation Director Glenn M. Okimoto, and the Honorable Mayor William P. Kenoi. <br />
