COUNTY OF HAWAII -+� �'�'��-�� •� STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION NO. 80 13 A RESOLUTION URGING THE 2013 HAWAII STATE LEGISLATURE TO AMEND HOUSE BILL NO. 174, HD2, TO REQUIRE LABELING ON ALL GENETICALLY ENGINEERED PRODUCE THAT IS BOTH IMPORTED AND GROWN IN HAWAII. WHEREAS, there has been a rapid growth of genetically engineered produce throughout the nation; and WHEREAS, the effects of consuming genetically engineered produce are unclear, and without mandatory labeling requirements of those foods, consumers may unknowingly be putting their health at risk; and WHEREAS, there is an ethical and moral obligation to provide accurate information in order for consumers to make an informed choice on whether or not to purchase and consume genetically engineered produce; and WHEREAS, in 2009 the Hawaii County Council adopted Resolution No. 220-09, Draft 3, urging Congress to require labeling of all genetically engineered food products in the United States; and WHEREAS, State laws requiring the labeling of genetically engineered produce will provide critical information to consumers, ensuring their ability to make fully-informed decisions that meet their expectations for food safety; and WHEREAS, the Hawai`i County Council recognizes its responsibility to be more pro- active in this critical policy area; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that in order to better protect and inform consumers in the State of Hawaii, the Hawai`i State Legislature is urged to amend House Bill No. 174, HD2, to require labeling on all genetically engineered produce that is both imported and grown in Hawai`i.
