Mr. Kanuha served as County of Hawai'i Director of Planning from 1988 to 1990. Most recently, Mr. Kanuha served as an Executive Manager at Surety Kohala Corporation, Inc. Pursuant to Rule 5(6) (g) of the Rules of Procedure and Organization of the Council of the County of Hawai'i, we respectfully request a waiver of this nomination through Committee so that it may be considered by the full Council on July 10th, 2013. A graduate of Hilo High School, Mr. Kanuha received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Geography with an emphasis on urban geography and planning from the University of Hawai'i at Hilo (1975),following discharge from active military service with the U.S. Army in Korea. Upon graduation, Mr. Kanuha began working as a contract planner with the Hawai'i County Planning Department in 1975 and has been involved in the land use and planning profession ever since. He has served as County Deputy Planning Director (1976-84), Planning Director (1988-90), and Assistant Land Agent, State Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Land Management Division (1985-87). His private sector experience includes independent planning consultant, Managing Director for the Hilo office of PBR Hawai'i, one of the largest planning/environmental studies/landscape architectural firms in Hawai'i, and Land Director for the former 25,000 acre Hamakua Sugar Company. He joined Chalon International of Hawai'i Inc.(currently Surety Kohala Corporation, Inc.), as Vice President for Strategic Planning and Governmental Affairs in 1992, and continues to remain with that company in other corporate management capacities. Mr. Kanuha served as Manager for Strategic Alternatives International LLC, an investment/project management subsidiary of Surety Kohala Corporation. He is the founding Member and Manager of Kohala A'ina Partners (KAP) LLC. Kohala A'ina Partners was formed in February, 2005, to act as development Manager for the Kohala Preserve Conservation Trust LLC project, a 7,000 acre joint development venture between Surety Kohala Corporation and Kohala A'ina Partners LLC. In 2007, Mr. Kanuha was appointed Executive Vice President of Kohala Investment Works LLC, an investment/management subsidiary of Surety Kohala Corporation. Kohala Investment Works LLC has real estate holdings and club memberships in Hawai'i and Napa Valley, CA, and is involved in other small projects in Bali and Japan. Mr. Kanuha was an active member of the Hawai'i Leeward Planning Conference (HLPC), and is a past member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), the National Association for Interpretation (NAI), and the State Na Ala Hele County Advisory Council. He has served on the Board of Directors for the American Lung Association, Big Island Road Runners Club, Big Island Mountain Bike Association (BIMBA), Na Kalai Wa'a Moku 0 Hawai'i, and the Hawai'i Islands Land Trust(HILT).
