COUNTY OF HAWAII •i �' /_•' STATE OF HAWAII <br /> ,▪4.O• F•N' � <br /> , <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 164 13 <br /> A RESOLUTION URGING THE HAWAII STATE LEGISLATURE TO APPROVE A <br /> NEW BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ENGINEERING (BSE) DEGREE PROGRAM AT <br /> THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT HILO (UH HILO). <br /> WHEREAS, engineering is the discipline, art, and profession that applies theory to <br /> design, develop and analyze technological solutions, operating at the interface of Society and <br /> Technology; and <br /> WHEREAS, a BSE degree program would complement existing UH Hilo bachelors <br /> programs, such as Agricultural Science, Astronomy and Physics, Mathematics, Computer <br /> Science, and Biological Sciences; and <br /> WHEREAS, the proposed undergraduate BSE degree program at UH Hilo supports <br /> science and technology-oriented economic development opportunities, meets the needs of <br /> existing businesses, and builds on the existing technical workforce to help attract new businesses <br /> to Hawai`i by producing graduates qualified to enter a wide variety of jobs, including high <br /> priority science and technology fields; and <br /> WHEREAS,the BSE degree program would provide Science, Technology, Engineering <br /> and Mathematics (STEM) pathways that build on the educational and vocational goals for <br /> County of Hawai`i children from Kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12); and <br /> WHEREAS, the proposed BSE degree program will address Hawai`i's Science and <br /> Technology goals by complementing existing STEM-related research programs, offering solid <br /> faculty-guided research experiences that will benefit student groups and the community, and <br /> ensure graduates are competitive in the global discovery and innovation enterprise; and <br /> WHEREAS, the creation of Hawai`i County's first engineering degree program would <br /> enhance academic and economic opportunities for the people of the County of Hawai`i and State <br /> of Hawai`i; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII, that the <br /> Hawai`i State Legislature approve a new Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B SE) degree <br /> program at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo (UH Hilo). <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED,the Hawai`i County Council urges the program <br /> approval to enable it to commence in the academic year of 2014 to 2015 and to include adequate <br /> and accessible engineering education and facilities. <br />
