Form #: B-52
7/18/91
DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
DEPARTMENT: FIRE DATE: 1/16/2014
STAFF CONTACT: Glen Honda PHONE: 932-2907
A. REQUEST:
The Hawai'i Fire Department is requesting a resolution authorizing the payment of funds, in a later year and
for more than one fiscal year, for a multi-year lease to purchase a (1) 3000 gallon fire apparatus. The lease
would be for a term of five (5) years. This fire apparatus (also known as a Tanker Truck) will be a assigned to
West Hawai'i.
B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED):
This apparatus will be assigned to West Hawai'i to provide additional response capabilities. In rural
residential areas where water is limited or not accessible, this vehicle will provide an additional 3000 gallons
of water for firefighting. Additionally, for wildland and brush fires, this vehicle will respond with the initial
forces to provide immediate water resources on the scene. Presently, fire appartus (fire trucks and smaller
brush trucks) carry 1000 gals or less and the fire department depends on Public Works or privately owned
water tankers to provide additional water resources. Their response is delayed and comes at a cost. Having
water tankers in our fleet is cost effective and operationally effective by reducing fire loss. Having the right
resources also reduces risk to firefighters and the community.
This purchase is supported in the current budget FY 13/14, 5221.02.111 item 5 One Tanker 2014.(Fire
Protection-OCE, Rental/Lease of Equipment).
CA= JAN 162014
SIGNED: DATE:
Department Head
