OJ�<V Oi------ <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII -•_ �' % •- STATE OF HAWAII <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 340 14 <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM THE DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO MALAMA 0 PUNA <br /> FOR THE KEAU`OHANA FOREST RESERVE RESTORATION PROJECT. <br /> WHEREAS, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of <br /> Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Hawai`i County has 20 of 43 forest reserves in the entire State <br /> spanning 445,000 of approximately 642,000 acres; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Keau`ohana Forest Reserve in the Puna district is home to rare native <br /> plants and wildlife and is considered one of the best lowland wet forests on State-owned land <br /> that is located below 1,000 feet in elevation; and <br /> WHEREAS, according to the project manager of the Keau`ohana Forest Reserve <br /> Restoration Project, approximately 110 acres of lowland forest will be restored to its native <br /> forest composition by controlling or removing invasive pests and plant species such as miconia, <br /> albizia, and strawberry guava; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), works with community <br /> organizations to protect and maintain the integrity of significant cultural and historical sites <br /> through promotion of sustainable practices, education, and biological control; and <br /> WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2) of the Hawai`i County Code, Contingency <br /> Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via resolution <br /> identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, or event for which the <br /> grant shall be used; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development provides grant funding to <br /> organizations that assist with community development and enhancement to quality of life; and <br /> WHEREAS, Contingency Relief funds from Council District 4 will be appropriated to the <br /> Department of Research and Development to provide a grant to Malama 0 Puna to assist with the <br /> Keau`ohana Forest Reserve Restoration Project; now, therefore, <br />
