COUNTY OF HAWAII • M '''i:•: STATE OF HAWAII <br /> • • 'Mr- <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 444 14 <br /> A RESOLUTION URGING THE HAWAII INVASIVE SPECIES COUNCIL TO <br /> AWARD A $400,000 GRANT TO THE HAWAII COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PARKS <br /> AND RECREATION TO RESEARCH METHODS TO CONTROL THE SPREAD OF <br /> THE LITTLE FIRE ANT. <br /> WHEREAS, the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation has applied for a <br /> grant from the Hawaii Invasive Species Council to control the spread of the little fire ant; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Hawaii Ant Lab have <br /> been working on a pilot project to identify the most effective and safest insecticides, and <br /> methods of application to treat infestations of the little fire ant at county beaches and parks; and <br /> WHEREAS,this grant will provide the necessary finding for labor, supplies and <br /> equipment to expand this program to other beaches and parks across Hawaii Island; and <br /> WHEREAS, the information from this program will allow state agencies, Hawaii <br /> County, Honolulu City and County, Kauai County and Maui County, private citizens and <br /> businesses to learn how to address the threat of the fire ant to preserve Hawaii's remaining <br /> native ecosystem; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the <br /> Hawaii Invasive Species Council is urged to award a$400,000 grant to the Hawaii County <br /> Department of Parks and Recreation for fiscal year 2015 to research methods to control the <br /> spread of the little fire ant. <br />
