You personify the concept of"giving back to the community" and are a point of pride for our island. You and the other volunteer attorneys provide our community with an invaluable service. You are an outstanding community advocate and a role model for others to emulate. In July of 2012, Hilo's first Self-Help Center opened in the Hilo Courthouse Building. The Center is the product of a joint effort between the Judiciary, Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, Hawaii State Bar Association, and the Hawaii County Bar Association and its members. Volunteer attorneys staff the Center two days a week and provide legal information to people in need. Over the past two years, over 1,500 people have been helped in Family Law matters, landlord-tenant disputes, employment cases, immigration needs, and many other legal areas. There is no charge for using the center, nor is there eligibility requirements for the people who seek help. Attorneys in Hilo who have volunteered at the Center represent the best of our legal community; their big hearts have made Hilo a better place to live for everyone.
