CERT teams have been recruited and trained around Hawaii Island, but they need a place to
meet and, more importantly, a place to store equipment and supplies that can be easily accessed in the
event of an emergency.
Hawai`i Island has 11 of the 13 climate zones of the world and Hawai`i County leads all 3,140 U.S.
counties in multi hazards potential. Residents and businesses should be prepared. CERT addresses those
needs.
NOAA's climate prediction center has issued an El Nino watch, which here in Hawai'i could mean a
return to drought-like conditions (leading to wildfires) and an increase in hurricane threats. Climate
experts believe there is a 50% chance El Nino will develop over the next six months. Experts say
Hawai'i has been very lucky to have avoided major hurricane events in recent years, but cautions some
of the worst tropical cyclones have occurred during El Nino years -- like Hurricane Iwa and Hurricane
Iniki.
Historic Spencer House in Waimea is centrally located in North Hawaii. As it becomes a thriving
community center, having a CERT presence will send a positive message and fill a needed void.
Thank you for your consideration.
Aloha,
Elaine Warner
Elaine Warner
P. 0.
