V Os N <br />�l <br />COUNTY OF HAWAIII STATE OF HAWAII <br />Tt 0r4 <br />RESOLUTION NO. 82 is <br />A RESOLUTION URGING THE HAWAII STATE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES <br />TO PASS HOUSE BILL NO. 1041 RELATING TO HUNTING. <br />WHEREAS, the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and <br />Wildlife has jurisdiction over more than 552,500 acres of huntable forest and recreational land <br />on the Island of Hawaii, including more than 430,000 acres of forest reserve land, 82,500 acres <br />in the natural area reserves system, and 40,000 acres designated as game management areas; and <br />WHEREAS, Hawai`i's forests are an important resource for Hawai`i's people, who use <br />it for subsistence, cultural, ceremonial, scientific, and recreational purposes, including hunting <br />and other activities; and <br />WHEREAS, issues surrounding the use and management of limited forest resources for <br />the purposes of game management have been an ongoing source of conflict for years; and <br />WHEREAS, these issues involve hunting, gathering, the protection and management of <br />native ecosystems and species, the need for greater community involvement in resource <br />management, and the need for an approved five-year game management plan; and <br />WHEREAS, House Bill No. 1041 establishes a game commission to serve in an advisory <br />capacity to the Governor and the Board of Land and Natural Resources; and <br />WHEREAS, an integrated approach to public hunting and game management can be <br />effective in protecting natural resources while preserving sustainable opportunities; now, <br />therefore, <br />
