WHEREAS, tax map key (3) 9-5-012:005, also known as Kahua `Olohu, was included <br /> on the prioritized list of lands to be considered for acquisition, which was submitted by the <br /> Commission in its 2014 Annual Report to the Mayor dated December 26, 2014; and <br /> WHEREAS, Kahua `Olohu, located in the district of Ka`u, is approximately 13 acres and <br /> is significant to the County of Hawai`i for the following reasons: <br /> (1) The site is known historically as a famous wahi pana (storied, legendary place) of <br /> Ka`u formerly used as a traditional gaming field for Hawaiian sports and Makahiki <br /> (religious and agricultural celebrations); <br /> (2) Kahua `Olohu is a famous stone bowling(`ulu maika) and dart sliding(moa pahe`e) <br /> field; <br /> (3) Acquisition would fulfill the purpose of preserving historic and culturally important <br /> sites that promote preservation and perpetuation of our native Hawaiian culture, <br /> tradition, and customary practices; and <br /> (4) The site has been listed on the State Inventory of Historic Properties and is eligible <br /> for inclusion in both the State and National Register of Historic Places; and <br /> WHEREAS, the owner of the subject property is willing to sell the parcel to the County <br /> of Hawai`i; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> pursuant to Chapter 2, Article 42 of the Hawai`i County Code,the Director of Finance is hereby <br /> authorized to enter into negotiations for the acquisition of Kahua `Olohu, situated at tax map key <br /> (3) 9-5-012:005 in the district of Kali, utilizing the Public Access, Open Space, and Natural <br /> Resources Preservation Fund. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Director of Finance is hereby authorized to <br /> initiate any funding mechanisms required for the acquisition of Kahua Olohu in accordance with <br /> the terms of this resolution. <br /> 2 <br />
