REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC SAFETY <br /> AND MASS TRANSIT <br /> DATE: January 5, 2016 Re: Comm.No. 608 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i <br /> TIME: 9:00 a.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawai`i County Council <br /> Hilo,Hawai`i 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit,to which was referred Comm.No. 608,reports as follows: <br /> Communication 608, transmitted by Mayor William P. Kenoi, dated December 15, 2015, requests review and <br /> favorable recommendation of the nomination of Ms. Kris L. K. Hoke, to the Hawai`i County Transportation <br /> Commission. Ms. Hoke is a lifelong resident of Hawai`i. She was formerly employed with Hawaiian Electric <br /> Light Company and is presently employed by IBEW L. U. 1260 as an Organizer/Representative. Ms. Hoke <br /> volunteers with the Hawaii Island Food Bank,the American Cancer Society and American Heart Association <br /> walks, and Labor Day Celebrations. She also volunteers at Mt. View School clean-ups. Ms. Hoke states that <br /> she is a Democrat. If confirmed, she will fill a vacant term to end on December 31, 2019. <br /> A motion to approve the nomination was made by Mr. Kanuha and seconded by Ms. Poindexter. Executive <br /> Assistant to Mayor Kenai, Ms. Charmaine Shigemura, introduced and provided background information on <br /> Nominee Hoke, expressed the Mayor's support, and requested Council's favorable action of this appointment. <br /> During discussion Your Committee expressed confident support and gratitude for Ms. Hoke`s interest in <br /> serving on the Transportation Commission. When given the opportunity to speak, Ms. Hoke briefly shared <br /> her background in regards to her experience travelling around the island; reasons of interest and participation <br /> as a commissioner. Ms. Hoke stated that as a commissioner, she would like to make it a possibility for all <br /> residents to have the opportunity to travel Hawai`i Island, both for business and pleasure. She shared the <br /> significance of the connection between each person,and she would like to keep ties fresh and clean and to re- <br /> establish them as much as possible. Ms. Hoke was informed by Your staff that she is not required to be present <br /> at final confirmation before the full Council. <br /> Your Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication <br /> No. 608, and recommends confirmation of the appointment of Ms. Kris L. K.
