REPORT OF THE
COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS
AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
DATE: August 16, 2016 Re: Comm. No. 953/Res. No. 568-16
PLACE: Council Chambers
Kona, Hawai`i
TIME: 10:56 a.m.
Council Chair and Members
Hawai`i County Council
Hilo, Hawai`i 96720
Your Committee on Governmental Relations and Economic Development, to which was referred
Resolution No. 568-16, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 568-16, transmitted by Council Member Valerie Poindexter, via Communication
No. 953, dated July 27, 2016, supports the principles of the United Nations' Convention on the
Elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.
There were three people who testified - all three were in support of this resolution.
Ms. Poindexter opened by stating this will make an official statement that the council supports
gender equity and thanked Farrah-Marie Gomes for working with her for many, many months.
Ms. Poindexter further stated that it is a good time to introduce this. Looking at this election
cycle, there are many women who have stepped up to the plate to get into leadership roles. This
election cycle, six women will be serving on the council. This is making history as it has never
happened before. Ms. Poindexter said she feels it is time to support this on a national level and
asked for support.
Ms. Wille asked what the position of the United States and why the government has not ratified
this convention. Ms. Poindexter called on Farrah to provide an explanation. Farrah explained
that there are several very influential individuals who feel that the United States has laws in place
that provide for gender equity, and that it is a contentious issue.
Your Committee on Governmental Relations and Economic Development is in accord with the
purpose and intent of Resolution No. 568-16, and recommends its adoption.
de
AYES NOES ABS EX Respectfully submitted,
CHUNG X
DAVID x COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENTAL
EOFF X RELATIONS AND E . •NOMIC DEVELOPMENT
ILAGAN X
kg A
KANUHA X 1 v
ONISHI X ( , •,
PALEKA x DENNIS "FRESH" ONISHI, CHAIR
POINDEXTER X GREDC REPORT NO.: 7
WILLE X ADOPTED: SEP 0 7 2016
