JMtglOf M,�1 <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII <br /> BILL NO. 234 <br /> (DRAFT 3) <br /> ORDINANCE NO. <br /> AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 14, ARTICLE 14, DIVISION 3, SECTION 14- <br /> 86 OF THE HAWAII COUNTY CODE 1983 (2005 EDITION, AS AMENDED) <br /> RELATING TO STREET NAMES. <br /> BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII: <br /> SECTION 1. Purpose. The purpose of this ordinance is to allow for more than one <br /> street named"Maile" in the Puna judicial district. <br /> There exists in the subdivision of Leilani Estates, district of Puna, ZIP code 96778 a <br /> street named Ma`ili, but for many years, residents have believed they lived on Maile Street. <br /> Numerous land owners on Ma`ili Street have listed their address on tax records, bills, mortgage <br /> documents, driver licenses, and bank accounts as Maile Street, Pahoa, HI 96778, which does not <br /> exist. <br /> There is a Maile Street in Puna, in the subdivision of Eden Roc Estates, Mountain View, <br /> HI 96771. There also exists a Maile Avenue in Nanawale Estates, a second Maile Avenue in <br /> Volcano Village, and a Maile Way in Ainaloa. The County Code as written does not permit more <br /> than one Maile Street in the Puna district. This ordinance will allow Ma`ili Street in Leilani <br /> Estates to be renamed Maile Street. <br /> SECTION 2. Chapter 14, article 14, division 3, section 14-86 of the Hawai`i County <br /> Code 1983 (2005 edition, as amended) is amended to read as follows: <br /> Section 14-86. Street name criteria. <br /> Street names shall meet the following criteria: <br /> (a) No duplication. To eliminate potential confusion, duplication of street names within <br /> the same judicial district or zip code zone shall not be permitted. Streets with the same <br /> name but different street type designations shall be considered duplicate street names. <br /> Exception: This provision shall not apply to any street named "Maile" in the Leilani <br /> Estates subdivision in Puna. <br /> (b) Continuity. Streets continuing through an intersection or are segments of a planned <br /> alignment shall keep the same name. <br /> (c) Directionals. The director may add directional indicators, such as north and west, to <br /> street name proposals as deemed appropriate. <br /> (d) Other Criteria. The director may specify other street naming criteria in rules. <br />
