COUNTY OF HAWAII <br />RESOLUTION NO. <br />STATE OF HAWAII <br />29 1'7 <br />A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br />AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br />DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE MALAMA KAI <br />FOUNDATION TO ASSIST THE WEST HAWAII FISHERY COUNCIL WITH <br />PROTECTING AND PRESERVING THE COAST OFF OF WEST HAWAII. <br />WHEREAS, the Malama Kai Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is <br />dedicated to ocean stewardship for current and future generations through community service <br />and public education; and <br />WHEREAS, Malama Kai Foundation supports the efforts of the West Hawaii Fishery <br />Council (WRFC) to protect and preserve the health of the coral reef and marine species off the <br />coast of West Hawaii; and <br />WHEREAS, WHFC provides forums for community involvement and education that <br />enhance public awareness of the importance of conserving these valuable resources; and <br />WHEREAS, the WHFC implemented a youth council in 2004 to engage the youth and <br />their families through educational projects associated with protecting marine species in a smoke-, <br />alcohol-, and drug-free learning environment; and <br />WHEREAS, Malama Kai Foundation is requesting funds to assist WHFC with rental <br />space for conducting monthly community meetings, website management, and marine education <br />and outreach to teach our youth and the community the importance of establishing marine <br />protected areas; and <br />WHEREAS, one of the Department of Liquor Control's goals is to support programs that <br />promote alcohol -free and drug-free events, such as the WHFC's programs that implement a safe <br />and healthy environment for learning; and <br />WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawaii County Code, <br />Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br />resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br />activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br />therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br />Contingency Relief funds from Council District 6 will be appropriated to the Department of <br />Liquor Control to provide a grant to the Malama Kai Foundation to assist the West Hawaii <br />Fishery Council with protecting and preserving the coast off of West Hawaii. <br />
