'S <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO MALAMA 0 PUNA TO <br /> ASSIST WITH EXPENSES ASSOCIATED WITH A RAT LUNG WORM DISEASE <br /> PREVENTION AND AWARENESS EVENT IN KAPOHO. <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is a 501(c)(3) local nonprofit whose purpose is to assure <br /> critical habitat for native species and open space for future generations; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna, alongthe with Department of Health, Hilo Medical <br /> p <br /> Center, UH School of Pharmacy, Big Island Invasive Species Committee, and Puna Community <br /> Medical Center, is hosting a rat lungworm awareness event, which will be held on August 26, <br /> 2017, at Green Mountain in Kapoho, in the district of Puna, to increase awareness of rat <br /> lungworm disease and prevention; and <br /> WHEREAS, rat lungworm is a disease caused by the ingestion of a parasite, often passed <br /> on from snails or slugs, which can affect the brain and spinal cord and lead to severe headaches, <br /> neck stiffness,temporary paralysis and sometimes even death; and <br /> WHEREAS, rat lungworm disease is negatively impacting the local economy due to the <br /> lack of reliable information available for residents and visitors, which has left many weary of <br /> purchasing and consuming locally grown vegetables; and <br /> WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code, <br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br /> activity, service, equipment,materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is requesting funds for entertainment, porta-potties, <br /> supplies for parking, copying cost for handouts, rat lungworm coloring books and crayons for the <br /> keiki, and artist and printing poster for the rat lungworm awareness event in Kapoho, which will <br /> be free and open to the public; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 4 will be appropriated to the Department of <br /> Research and Development to provide a grant to Malama 0 Puna to assist with expenses <br /> associated with hosting an event to increase awareness of rat lungworm disease. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai`i hereby <br /> transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below: <br />
