COUNTY OF HAWAII 44 -'=4 STATE OF HAWAII '1TE OF'N''' • RESOLUTION NO. 269 1.7 A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE FRIENDS OF HOKULE`A AND HAWAI`ILOA FOR THE "MAHALO, HAWAII SAIL" EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH IN WEST HAWAII. WHEREAS, members of the Polynesian Voyaging Society sailed the Hokulea around the world on a historic three-year voyage, called the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage, to explore and build global partnerships to improve our oceans and"Island Earth"; and WHEREAS, to thank the people of Hawai`i for their support, crew members of the voyaging canoes Hokulea and Hikianalia have commenced the "Mahalo, Hawai`i Sail,"which will include visits to approximately 40 ports for an educational outreach to nearly 80 communities throughout the Hawaiian Islands; and WHEREAS, The Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to teach and perpetuate the Hawaiian traditions of building, restoring, and caring for canoes; and WHEREAS, The Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa will be helping with the "Mahalo, Hawai`i Sail"by coordinating outreach events for crew members to engage with schools and organizations through service projects,presentations, and canoe tours; and WHEREAS, The Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa is requesting funds to assist with costs for food, drinks, and supplies for outreach events when the crew members of Hokule`a and Hikianalia visit West Hawai`i in September and October of 2017; and WHEREAS, one of the goals of the Department of Parks and Recreation is to facilitate opportunities, such as this educational outreach,that meet the needs of the Big Island community while maintaining the cultural uniqueness of our rich heritage and diversity; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code, Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that Contingency Relief funds from Council District 8 will be appropriated to the Department of Parks and Recreation to provide a grant to The Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa to coordinate events during the "Mahalo, Hawai`i Sail" educational outreach in West Hawai`i.
