REPORT OF THE <br /> COMMITTEE ON PLANNING <br /> DATE: September 6,2017 Re: Comm. No. 405 <br /> PLACE: Council Chambers <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i <br /> TIME: 9:30 a.m. <br /> Council Chair and Members <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> Hilo, Hawai`i 96720 <br /> Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 405, reports as <br /> follows: <br /> Communication No. 405, transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim, dated August 16, 2017, nominates <br /> Mr. Steven Hirakami to the Hawai`i County Board of Appeals. <br /> Mr. Hirakami has been a resident of Hawai`i for 43 years and states that he is not affiliated with <br /> any political party. If confirmed, he will serve a vacant term ending December 31, 2020. <br /> Deputy Managing Director Barbara Kossow introduced Mr. Hirakami who appeared in person <br /> for this nomination. Mr. Hirakami commented that he will bring a good perspective to this <br /> Board because he has seen Hawai`i before and after Statehood in 1959, and that he has seen <br /> anchialine ponds that were covered over to build the Hyatt Regency in 1984. He also stated that <br /> it is this type of irreversible action that really needs to be prevented. <br /> Several Council Members commented in favor of Mr. Hirakami. The vote was then taken with <br /> all Council Members voting"aye."
