RESOLUTION NO. 329 17 A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE FRIENDS OF HOKULE`A AND HAWAI`ILOA FOR THE "MAHALO, HAWAII SAIL" OUTREACH EVENTS IN WEST HAWAII. WHEREAS, members of the Polynesian Voyaging Society sailed the Hokulea around the world on a historic voyage, called the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage, to support and encourage efforts toward a more sustainable planet; and WHEREAS, crew members of the voyaging canoes Hokule`a and Hikianalia will be sailing around the Hawaiian Islands to nearly 80 communities for an educational outreach called "Mahalo, Hawai`i Sail"; and WHEREAS, The Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to teach and perpetuate the Hawaiian traditions of building, restoring, and caring for canoes; and WHEREAS, The Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa will be working with the crew members of Hokule`a and Hikianalia to coordinate outreach events with the communities, which will include service projects, educational presentations, and canoe tours; and WHEREAS, The Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa is requesting financial assistance for food, drinks, and related supplies needed to hold outreach events during the port visits in West Hawai`i in September and October 2017; and WHEREAS, the Department of Parks and Recreation supports this outreach event as it falls within its Culture and Education program to promote,perpetuate, and encourage activities and programs in culture, art, history, and humanities; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code, Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that Contingency Relief funds from Council District 7 will be appropriated to the Department of Parks and Recreation to provide a grant to The Friends of Hokule`a and Hawai`iloa to assist with expenses related to the "Mahalo, Hawaii Sail" outreach events in West Hawai`i.
