.-�tYON <br /> F .,, I <br /> • •C - \�\iJ/4 <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII -•iA 'i •••f STATE OF HAWAII <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 419 17 <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO MALAMA 0 PUNA TO <br /> ASSIST WITH EXPENSES FOR RESEARCH ON RAT LUNGWORM DISEASE. <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been actively <br /> engaged in invasive species issues for over 20 years, and whose mission is to assure critical <br /> habitat for native species and open space through environmental education and advocacy; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is working together with Susan Jarvi, Ph.D., a professor at <br /> the University of Hawai`i at Hilo, Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy, who is overseeing the <br /> research on rat lungworm disease; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is requesting funds to pay for the services of a laboratory <br /> technician and to purchase supplies required to conduct a viability bioassay study in rats, the <br /> results of which will lay the necessary groundwork to effectively combat rat lungworm disease in <br /> terms of prevention, early detection, and treatment; and <br /> WHEREAS, one of the program objectives of the Department of Research and <br /> Development is to support research on invasive species, such as the semi-slug that is believed to <br /> be the cause of a recent outbreak of rat lungworm disease in Puna; and <br /> WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code, <br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br /> activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 8 will be appropriated to the Department of <br /> Research and Development to provide a grant to Malama 0 Puna for research on rat lungworm <br /> disease. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai`i hereby <br /> transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below: <br />
