\�IJi�l <br /> COUNTY OF HAWAII •?` ''-= �� ••� STATE OF HAWAII <br /> •RESOLUTION NO. • <br /> ` 21 17 <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO MALAMA 0 PUNA TO <br /> ASSIST WITH THE RAT LUNGWORM RESEARCH. <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is a 501(c)(3) local, nonprofit organization whose purpose <br /> is to assure critical habitat for native species and open space for future generations; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is actively educating the public on the transmission of <br /> Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm) into the food chain and its dangers to human health; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is partnering with Dr. Susan Jarvi of the University of <br /> Hawai`i at Hilo's Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy and the United States Department of <br /> Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) on a research project <br /> to find a safe and effective vegetable rinse that would reduce the risk of contracting rat <br /> lungworm disease; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna desires to fund a laboratory technician position for eight <br /> weeks to conduct a viability bioassay in rats to be able to distinguish live from dead rat <br /> lungworm larva; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development supports sustainable <br /> agricultural processing and practices that promote healthy and safe produce for Hawai`i Island <br /> residents and visitors; and <br /> WHEREAS,pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code, <br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br /> activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 5 will be appropriated to the Department of <br /> Research and Development to provide a grant to Malama 0 Puna to assist with this research <br /> project that seeks to create a rinsing product to reduce the risk of contracting rat lungworm <br /> disease. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai`i hereby <br /> transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below: <br />
