ATE <br /> ..................... <br /> RESOLUTION NO. 435 1 <br /> A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br /> AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br /> DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO MALAMA 0 PUNA TO <br /> SUPPORT RESEARCH EFFORTS TO COMBAT RAT LUNGWORM DISEASE. <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that partners with <br /> governmental agencies and nongovernmental organizations with similar interests to increase <br /> public awareness on issues involving environmental protection and community wellness, such as <br /> rat lungworm disease on Hawai`i Island; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is partnering with Dr. Susan Jarvi of the University of <br /> Hawai`i at Hilo's Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy and the United States Department of <br /> Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) on a research project <br /> to find a safe and effective vegetable rinse that would reduce the risk of contracting rat <br /> lungworm disease; and <br /> WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is requesting funds for laboratory technician wages, <br /> supplies, and disposable laboratory tools to continue the research on rat lungworm disease; and <br /> WHEREAS, the Department of Research and Development supports opportunities to <br /> expand the market for Hawai`i Island produce and facilitates private-public partnerships for <br /> extension programs, agricultural research, and infrastructure; and <br /> WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai`i County Code, <br /> Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br /> resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br /> activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br /> Contingency Relief funds from Council District 9 will be appropriated to the Department of <br /> Research and Development to provide a grant to Malama 0 Puna to support research efforts to <br /> combat rat lungworm disease. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai`i hereby <br /> transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below: <br />
